Welcome to the
Guthmiller Lab Website!

About the Lab

We are located within the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, which is located 9 miles from downtown Denver and 20 miles from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

We study Humoral Immunity, Influenza Viruses, and Everything in Between

Our lab is interested in understanding the complexities of humoral immunity against rapidly evolving viruses. Our lab has three major interests -

Manipulating host factors to improve humoral immunity:
Robust and broad humoral immunity against influenza viruses is rarely induced for unclear reasons. Our group is developing novel models to investigate the host factors that limit protective humoral immunity and how distinct vaccines and adjuvants can overcome these limitations.

Zoonotic Influenza Viruses and Broadly Protective Humoral Immunity:
Zoonotic influenza viruses pose a threat to human health. Our group is developing methods to rapidly screen preexisting human antibody responses against pandemic-threat influenza viruses as well as using humoral immunity to screen for viral spillover. We are also investigating humoral immunity in important animal reservoirs, including pigs and ducks.

Co-evolution of humoral immunity and influenza viruses:
Humans are exposed to influenza viruses throughout their lives. We are interested in understanding how the first and repeated exposures shape the human B cell repertoire against influenza viruses. Conversely, we are interested in understanding how constantly evolving antibody responses shape viral evolution, pathogenesis, and selection.
